Why Does My GFI Keep Tripping?

GFCI receptacle troubleshooting is possibly the number one or two question I get asked by people. There are many reasons and things to be considered.

  • Is there a specific device or appliance that happens to be plugged in when the GFCI trips? If so, unplug it and plug it into a different place in the building to see if it trips another GFCI receptacle.
  • What kind of devices do you have plugged into that one circuit? If you have a breaker tripping not just your receptacle you may have too many large loads connected. this will overwhelm the breaker and cause it to trip. Most common are space heaters when paired in an office. The printer and heater can cause an overload. Kitchen appliances also draw large amounts of power. A tea kettle by itself will take up more than half of a kitchen circuit.
  • Are any of the receptacles warm to the touch or discolored? You may have a damaged receptacle needing replaced. This can also cause a GFCI receptacle to trip.
  • Is the breaker handle loose and easy to switch compared to other breakers? If so, the breaker is "on its last leg".

If you find the cause, YAY! If you don't, call us for a consult. GFI troubleshooting can be frustrating and we would be happy to assist
